Definitions

I throw around a lot of lingo; here are some definitions* so that you know what I'm talking about : )

Antioch: the Sword of the Spirit community in London.

Charismatic: a people of praise and prayer, renewed by the word and power of the Holy Spirit, and open to the gifts of the Spirit.

Community: a group of people dedicated to live their Christian commitment out in a particular manner, united by a covenant, a common way of life, and a dedication to common purpose and mission.  Communities are not churches, they are made up of people from many different Christian traditions.  The full listing of the Sword of the Spirit communities can be found here.

Ecumenical: "pertaining to the whole Christian church."  An ecumenical group is one that is made up of Christians from different church backgrounds (i.e. Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, etc.).

GAP Year: a one-year internship with Kairos that involves serving with a community in the Sword of the Spirit, along with doing outreach at the university level and working with youth programs.

Household: a group of people living together in a common way of life.  Many households have times set aside to pray and eat common meals together a couple of times per week.  The goal is to build good Christian friendships, grow in love for one another, and to encourage each other in the Christian walk.

Kairos: the organization that runs the youth programs for the Sword of the Spirit.

Koinonia: the university outreach in London.

Lord's Day:  because the Sword of the Spirit is ecumenical, all its members can't go to church together on Sundays.  So that we can celebrate the Lord's day as a body, we do a meal and time of prayer together on Saturday nights.

Prayer Meeting: a UCO/community gathering that features a time of worship and a talk.

The Word of Life: the Sword of the Spirit community in Ann Arbor (and that sponsors the A2 UCO).

The Servants of the Word: an ecumenical, international Christian brotherhood of men living single for the Lord.  Members are often referred to as "Brothers."  Someone who is looking into life with the Brothers but hasn't yet made their life commitment is called an "affiliate."

The Sword of the Spirit:  an international, ecumenical "community of communities."  There are more than 65 spread around the world in 24 different countries.

UCO: University Christian Outreach; "a community of disciples on mission."  A network of outreach organizations aimed at the college level.

*Some (okay, most) definitions borrowed from the Ann Arbor UCO website (thanks!)
